Educational Tours - History - Rome & Pompeii

During the height of the Roman Empire, Pompeii was a bustling town and benefited from the extraordinary advancements in technology for which the Roman Empire was renowned. When Vesuvius erupted the town was covered in molten lava and effectively frozen in time and now offers unique insight into life during the Roman Empire.

Today, hundreds of thousands of people travel to Rome each year to experience the life of the ancient Roman Empire, states World Travels. With priceless ancient attractions, Rome boasts arguably the best sightseeing in the world. The Italian capital also offers modern thrills, with an unmatched fashion scene, a remarkable shopping experience and a laid-back atmosphere. From her humble beginning as a tiny village, Rome has grown in leaps and bounds to become one of the most respected cities in the world. Through the centuries, the city of Rome rose as a mighty European empire, declined as a result of plagues and famine, prospered through the Renaissance and the Dark Ages, successfully fought through numerous attempts of foreign domination and made her way to a powerful modern city.

Rome and Pompeii - Educational Tour

Rome offers a wealth of opportunities for a variety of curriculum subjects.

Walk through the Forum, be amazed by the Colosseum, visit temples, baths, arches and arenas to enhance understanding of Roman architecture, urban planning and everyday life.

Explore the complex of palaces, courtyards and galleries at the Vatican, a ‘city state within a city’. Art and Design students will be overwhelmed by the masterpieces of the Sistine Chapel, considered to be one of the greatest treasures of all time. Assess the styles of Caravaggio or Titian at Borghese Gallery, or contrast with 19th century works of Renoir, Van Gogh and Degas.

Rome is at the heart of one of the most important Empires in the Mediterranean world, the remains of which are on display throughout the city. Students can walk through the Forum, where the great orators spoke, and see the temples, baths and circuses which will create a better understanding of their place in Roman culture.

• KS 4-5: Study the architecture and remains of Rome to see what can be reconstructed and understood from these buildings.
• KS 4-5: See the city that created some of the great poets and writers of Roman literature and discover what provided their inspiration.
• KS 4-5: Develop familiarity with archaeological sites and sculptures specified in OCR/AQA specifications.

Student Outcomes:

• An opportunity to study Roman architecture and modern archaeological techniques first-hand.
• See the places relevant to student's studies, providing a better understanding of context, for example: the life and career of Cicero.
• Assess the societal and technological changes that took place throughout Roman history.
• Evaluate the continuing influence of themes and ideas found in Roman history and society today.

HERCULANEUM & POMPEII

On the morning of August 24, in AD79, the long dormant volcano of Vesuvius erupted, and by the evening of that day Pompeii, Herculaneum and the nearby coastal resort of Stabiae disappeared from the face of the inhabited world.

Buried by the rain of ash, pumice and volcanic mud, they were to lie entombed for more than sixteen centuries. The first real excavation conducted along scientific lines took place in 1748, during the reign of Charles of Bourbon, at which time excavations at Herculaneum had already begun.

More systematic excavations were conducted in 1860 under the direction of Giuseppe Fiorelli, who developed the technique of pouring liquid plaster into the spaces left in the layer of solidified ashes, thus obtaining casts of the victims who died during the eruption.

There are so many different options available for any particular tour that provide opportunity for a more cost effective price or upgrades with certain hotels that you might miss out on a better deal. Additionally, you might have your own particular curriculum requirements that need to be built into the itinerary.

We strongly believe that a real person is better able to make intuitive decisions about an educational tour enquiry than a computer programme that will not have the same dedication or commitment to providing the best possible service.

Rest assured, you will always be dealing with a real live person and you will have direct contact with the same person all the time. You will never have to deal with an anonymous person in a call centre.

It is our absolute, number one, priority to ensure that you are happy with the details of your Tour Itinerary before you book and it is important that you have the time to do this.

It is also important to remember, however, that prices change all the time (particularly the cost of flights) and it is with this in mind, that we would urge you to try and confirm the booking as soon as possible. We will provide a quote according to your enquiry for the best prices on the day. Communication is the key to getting the best deal and we will work to ensure that we respond to your requests as quickly as possible to guarantee the best prices for you.

Our usual ratio of free places is one member of staff for every 10 students. It is occasionally possible for us to arrange other 'free place' ratios. If you would like to receive a quote for other ratios then please let us know in your initial enquiry.

The Itinerary shown for this trip is only a suggested itinerary and is completely flexible. The itinerary can be used as a starting point from which to develop a programme that is most suited to your curriculum requirements. If you feel that the suggested itinerary meets your needs then it can certainly be used as it stands for your trip.

We don't sub-contract to other tour companies and we use our own guides and tour leaders which means we can enjoy working with you before you travel and during your trip to ensure that all of your requirements are met and your learning targets are achieved.

We have available full and comprehensive Risk Assessments prepared to the strictest LEA requirements. The documents are made available Free of Charge, upon request, to all Education and Youth Group leaders who are arranging a trip with us.

Yes, of course.

If you have heard about a certain hotel or you have a particular hotel in mind where you would like to stay, simply let us know in the "Comments" section at the end of the online Enquiry Form (Enquire Now) and we will be pleased to check availability and include this in your quote.

The simple answer is "...just let us know."

It is impossible for us to send you a quote for every possible hotel option so we usually provide a choice of two or three different hotels in each quote. We are always happy to provide you with other choices and the more information you can give us will help us in finding that sought after hotel that is "Just Right".

We have tens of thousands of hotels available to us throughout the world and we fully accept that we might occassionally select a hotel that doesn't quite meet your requirements. You might prefer a different location or have in mind a particular hotel that you feel would be better suited to your students. Simply drop us a line and we will look for alternative options that better meet what you are looking for
